What Inspired the Film?

Bad Sisters is a 2017 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Tina M. Jasmine and starring Taissa Farmiga, Christina Hendricks, and Florence Pugh. The film’s plot follows the story of three women who take a jobs as Bad Sisters in an all-female mental institution in order to uncover its dark secrets. The film was shot in locations throughout New York City, including the Orchard House Asylum, which served as the fictional psychiatric hospital in the film.

The film’s plot was inspired by Jasmine’s own experience working as a mental health therapist for adolescents in Houston, Texas. Jasmine said that she “wanted to explore psychological thriller dynamics that could exist within institutions like these.”

Filming took place over eighteen days at various locations in New York City, including the Orchard House Asylum on East 65th Street near Central Park. The asylum had not been used for filming since 1994, but was chosen because it “looked like an abandoned mental hospital”. Parts of the film were also shot at Saint Ann’s School on West 84th Street and St. John’s University on Amsterdam Avenue.
